Transport-independent fairness

چکیده
The Internet relies on cooperative endpoints to react to signals from the network that congestion is occurring. In particular, TCP interprets packet loss as a signal of congestion. However there are many new non-cooperative protocols in use which attempt to exploit the network aggressively and do not reduce their demands when the network signals congestion. We propose the aggregate control of ‘‘fluxes” defined by policies at individual routers. Each router can then calculate an optimal allocation of bandwidth to each flux contending for a given output link. We propose a combined hill climbing and convex programming method for this optimization, which we call HCCP. HCCP is designed to punish greedy fluxes rather than just regulating them: such fluxes may find their bandwidth allocation reduced to zero if they are sufficiently aggressive. Our results show that HCCP is effective at regulating a wide range of rather generally characterized transport protocols. We explore the use of both throughput maximization and proportionally fair allocation and recommend the latter because the former often leads to the situation where one or more fluxes receive zero bandwidth. 2009 Elsevier B.V. Fairness Analysis and Improvement of Transport Layer Protocols
The article presents a comparison of fairness properties of different congestion control schemes. It is hard to investigate the various protocol mechanisms implemented in transport protocols; therefore a simulator called SimCast is developed for the analysis of fairness characteristics of transport protocols as well as a network traffic generator and measurement tool called SimTest. This articl...
متن کاملPfrtp: per Flow Rate Based Transport Protocol
The important research issue that is to be tackled in multihop ad hoc wireless network is the guarantee of fairness for concurrent flows in rate based transport protocol (Radunovic et al 2004). In this chapter, throughput unfairness of concurrent flow is analyzed. The end-to-end throughput of a packet flow degrades significantly with the increase in the number of its transmission hops. Fairness...
متن کاملSABUL: A High Performance Data Transfer Protocol
The paper describes SABUL, an application level data transfer protocol for data intensive applications over high bandwidth-delay product networks. SABUL is designed for reliability, high performance, fairness, and stability. This unidirectional protocol uses UDP to transfer data and TCP to send back control messages. A rate based congestion control that tunes the inter-packet transmission time ...
متن کاملMeasuring Transport Protocol Potential for Energy Efficiency
We investigate the energy-saving potential of transport protocols. We focus on the system-related aspect of energy. Do we have to damage or enhance system fairness in order to provide energy efficiency? We depart from defining protocol potential; we compare different transmission strategies and protocol mechanisms; and we report our results on the impact of each mechanism on system energy. We h...
متن کاملImproved Datagram Transport Protocol over Wireless Sensor Networks- TCP Fairness
TCP connections have small bandwidth-delay product and frequent packet loss in wireless sensor networks due to route breakages and radio interference. Datagram transport protocol provides a reliable end-to-end transport protocol over wireless sensor networks. This paper deals with improvement of TCP Fairness as Fairness in wireless sensor networks plays a major role to have maximum fair share o...
متن کاملAlgorithms for Theoretical Investigation of Fairness in Multipath Transport
With the onset of multipath transport protocols such as MPTCP and multihomed mobile devices, fairness considerations which have been widely analyzed for legacy TCP need to be re-investigated. A practical realization of fairness amongst different participants is known to be difficult but even the theoretical calculation of the resource capacity and its allocation is not a trivial task. Therefore...
